The earliest known set appears in the writings of Zosimos of Panopolis, a Greco-Egyptian alchemist who worked around 300 CE in Alexandria. Zosimos drew glyphs for metals, minerals, and processes, borrowing from Egyptian hieratic script and Greek abbreviations. A circle with a cross beneath it meant copper. A triangle pointed up meant fire. These signs were not shorthand in the modern sense. They were part of a coded language meant to protect sacred knowledge from the uninitiated.
Over the following centuries the system grew. Islamic alchemists such as Jabir ibn Hayyan (Geber, active circa 800 CE) standardized several symbols and added new ones for the three principles he defined: sulfur, mercury, and salt. By the European Renaissance, alchemical manuscripts contained hundreds of distinct glyphs, many adapted from astrology. The seven planetary metals (gold/Sol, silver/Luna, copper/Venus, iron/Mars, tin/Jupiter, mercury/Mercury, lead/Saturn) used the same signs as the celestial bodies because an alchemist saw no separation between the material and the cosmic. How Did the Periodic Table Come to Be?

The path from alchemical symbols to the periodic table ran through a few key figures who deliberately broke with the old system. In 1661, Robert Boyle published The Sceptical Chymist and argued that the four elements of antiquity (earth, air, fire, water) were not true elements at all. He proposed that an element was a substance that could not be broken down into simpler substances. Antoine Lavoisier published the first modern list of elements in his 1789 Traité Élémentaire de Chimie. You must look up its row and column for that information.

Why Did Alchemists Use Symbols Instead of Letters?
Alchemical symbols served three practical functions that the periodic table does not need. First, secrecy. Many alchemists worked under threat of persecution from church or state. A text that read “the Green Lion devours the Sun” was a recipe for dissolving gold in a specific acid, but only if you knew the code.
Second, condensation. A single symbol could represent an entire process or concept. Third, correspondences. Alchemical symbols linked a substance to its archetype. The symbol for antimony is a circle with a cross below: the same sign used for the Earth element and for the mineral salt. That was not confusion. It was a statement: antimony participates in the fixed, the earthy, the salty. A chemist sees a chemical; an alchemist sees a node in a web of cosmic relationships.
How Do the Two Systems Handle the Same Substances?
Take gold. The periodic table says: atomic number 79, atomic weight 196.97, symbol Au, group 11, period 6. That tells you its place in the electron configuration, its reactivity, its isotopes. It tells you nothing about why human beings have prized gold for five thousand years.
Alchemy says: the circle with a dot. The sun. The King. The metal of perfection, incorruptible, the goal of the Great Work. Gold is the model for the Philosopher’s Stone itself: a substance so pure it can transmit its perfection to base metals. The physical properties (gold’s density, its resistance to tarnish, its yellow color) are the visible signatures of its inner purity. An alchemist would not use gold to make a wire without also considering its relation to the heart, the solar plexus, the element of fire, and the month of July.
One sees a data point. The other sees a key.
Where the Two Systems Overlap
Surprisingly, the periodic table and alchemical symbols share one deep structural feature: both group substances according to hidden relationships. Mendeleev’s table groups elements by recurring properties (valence, reactivity, electronegativity). The alchemical tradition groups metals by planetary affinity (the Moon for silver, Mars for iron, etc.) and by the three principles (sulfur = combustibility, mercury = volatility, salt = fixity). Both systems claim that the world is patterned, and that the pattern can be written down.
The difference is what each system considers fundamental. For the periodic table, the atom is the foundation. For alchemy, the foundation is quality and transformation. A modern chemist can look at the periodic table and predict that sodium and potassium will behave similarly. An alchemist could look at the planetary metals and know that lead (Saturn) is heavy, cold, and slow, and that gold (Sun) is warm, bright, and quick. Each prediction worked within its own frame.
What Modern Science Owes to Alchemy
It is a common error to treat alchemy as the primitive ancestor of chemistry and the periodic table as its superior heir. That misreads the evidence. Several elements that appear on the periodic table were first isolated by alchemists: antimony (known to Jabir ibn Hayyan around 800 CE), arsenic (Albertus Magnus, 1250), bismuth (Claude Geoffroy the Younger, 1753, though known earlier), phosphorus (Hennig Brand, 1669, while searching for the Philosopher’s Stone). The methods of distillation, sublimation, and crystallization were refined in alchemical laboratories.
More important, the idea that matter is composed of a few fundamental substances runs from Empedocles through Jabir through Paracelsus through Boyle to Mendeleev. The periodic table did not kill alchemy. It took alchemy’s question (what is matter made of?) and answered it with a different vocabulary.
