Pull up your birth chart. The wheel is divided into twelve irregular slices, each one a domain of life. The 7th house sits directly opposite the rising sign, the one that governs how you meet the world one-on-one. The 7th house is the house of partnerships, marriage, open enemies, and contracts. To find it, locate your Ascendant and then find the exact opposite point on the zodiac wheel: that is the Descendant, the cusp of the 7th house.

What is the 7th House in Astrology?

What is the 7th House in Astrology

The 7th house is the house of the other. It governs how we enter committed relationships, how we choose our partners, and how we face people who oppose us. In traditional astrology it is the house of marriage, but it also covers business partnerships, legal agreements, and open adversaries. The sign on its cusp and any planets inside it reveal the kind of partner we attract and the terms we negotiate.

Where Did the 7th House Come From? A Brief History

Where Did the 7th House Come From A Brief History

The twelve houses of astrology are older than the zodiac signs themselves. The earliest known system of house division appears in the work of Claudius Ptolemy (c. 150 CE), in his Tetrabiblos. Ptolemy called the 7th house the “setting place” (Greek dysis), because the Sun sets on the western horizon, opposite the rising point of the Ascendant. The 7th house cusp, the Descendant, is the degree of the zodiac that is setting at the exact moment of birth.

The History and Origins of the 7th House

Hellenistic astrologers (200 BCE – 400 CE) used the 7th house primarily for marriage, business partners, and open enemies. The 1st house was the self, the 7th was the “other person.” In the Astronomica of Manilius (c. 10 CE), the 7th house is described as the place where “the bonds of marriage are formed and dissolved.” The Roman astrologer Vettius Valens (c. 150 CE) wrote that the 7th house reveals “the quality of the spouse and the outcome of conflicts.”

Medieval Arabic astrologers such as Abu Ma’shar (787–886 CE) refined the 7th house’s role in predicting the outcome of lawsuits and the character of open enemies. By the Renaissance, William Lilly (1602–1681) in Christian Astrology gave the 7th house rulership over “marriage, lawsuits, known enemies, and all bargains and contracts.” The house has held that core meaning for nearly two thousand years.

That history is why the 7th house is still called the “Descendant” or the “angle of the west.” The word “angle” comes from the Greek gonia, meaning a corner of the chart. The 7th house is one of the four cardinal houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th), and it carries the urgency of a point where the sky meets the horizon.

What the 7th House Actually Means

The 7th house is the house of the other: partnership, marriage, open enemies, and the contracts that bind one person to another. It sits opposite the 1st house of the self, and its position in the chart shows the kind of ‘other’ the native attracts and the kind of relationship they must learn. In the traditional system the 7th is also the house of the Descendant, the point on the horizon where the sun sets — the threshold where the self meets what is not itself.

How the 7th House Works: Mirror, Signs, and Planets

The 7th house is the mirror of the 1st. The 1st house is the self we present, the mask we wear, the body. The 7th house is the self we attract, the qualities we seek in another person. It is the house of projection: what we cannot own in ourselves we often meet in a partner or an enemy.

The sign on the 7th house cusp describes the kind of relationship we are drawn to. A 7th house cusp in Aries, for example, suggests partnerships that are direct, competitive, and quick to ignite. In Libra, the house’s natural ruler, the drive is toward harmony, balance, and a partner who mirrors our own aesthetic. Every sign modifies the relationship style.

Planets in the 7th house intensify its themes. Venus in the 7th house often grants a beautiful or charming partner, but it also indicates that the native values partnership above all else. Saturn in the 7th house can mean a late marriage, a partner older or more responsible, or a relationship that feels like a duty. Mars in the 7th house can bring conflict, passion, or a partner who is aggressive.

7th House Meaning: Relationships, Contracts, and Open Enemies

The 7th house also rules open enemies: people who oppose you directly, not the hidden rivals of the 12th house. In mundane astrology, the 7th house governs treaties, diplomacy, and the outcome of lawsuits. When you cast a chart for a question about a lawsuit, you look to the 7th house.

Finding the 7th house requires knowing your exact birth time, because the Ascendant changes every two hours. Without a birth time, you can still guess the 7th house sign if you know your Sun sign and have a rough birth time, but the cusp degree will be approximate.

Here is the manual method, which we use when we are working with a printed chart and no software:

  1. Locate your Ascendant. The Ascendant is the sign and degree on the eastern horizon at your birth time. It is usually marked on the left side of the chart wheel, at the 9 o’clock position.
  2. Add 180 degrees. The Descendant is exactly opposite the Ascendant. If your Ascendant is at 15 degrees of Taurus, add 180 degrees to get 15 degrees of Scorpio. That degree is the cusp of the 7th house.
  3. Identify the sign. The sign containing that degree is the sign on the 7th house cusp. In this example, the 7th house cusp is in Scorpio.
  4. Check the house system. The above method works for the Equal House system (where each house is 30 degrees). In Placidus or Koch systems, the 7th house cusp is still the Descendant, but the other houses are not equal. The 7th house may contain parts of the sign opposite the Ascendant, or even bleed into the next sign if the chart is skewed by latitude. Use your chart’s house system to know the exact boundaries.
  5. Look for planets. Any planet in the 7th house will be between the 7th house cusp and the 8th house cusp. These planets are in the 7th house regardless of sign.

If you use modern astrology software (like Astro.com or Solar Fire), the 7th house cusp is automatically calculated. Simply read the “Descendant” line: it gives the degree and sign. That is the cusp of your 7th house.

7th House vs. 5th House vs. 8th House: Key Differences

A common confusion is the difference between the 5th house (romance, pleasure, casual dating) and the 7th house (committed partnership). The 5th house is the house of fun, of the lover you meet for a summer. The 7th house is the house of the contract, the person you marry or the business partner you sign papers with.

The 7th house is also different from the 8th house (shared resources, sexual intimacy, joint finances). The 8th house is what happens after the commitment: the merging of money, the inheritance, the deep psychological bond. The 7th house is the doorway. The 8th house is the room behind it.

In synastry (relationship astrology), the 7th house of one person’s chart often receives planets from the other person’s chart. That is how we see attraction: if your partner’s Sun falls in your 7th house, you are likely to see them as the ideal partner. That is not a guarantee of a good relationship, but it is a strong pull.

The most important classical text on the 7th house is Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos (Book III, Chapter 10). He writes: “The place of marriage is the setting place, which is the 7th house, and it signifies the quality of the spouse and the time of marriage.” Ptolemy used the 7th house to predict the age at which a person would marry, based on the position of the Moon and Venus.

William Lilly in Christian Astrology (1647) gives a long list of 7th house significations: “Marriage, wives, sweethearts, open enemies, lawsuits, the defendant in a trial, bargains, contracts, and all who are associated with the native in a public manner.” He also notes that if the 7th house is afflicted by a malefic planet, the native may suffer “many enemies and much strife in marriage.”

Robert Hand, in his 1978 book Horoscope Symbols, modernized the 7th house interpretation by emphasizing the psychological concept of projection. Hand writes: “The 7th house represents the qualities we need to develop in ourselves and that we therefore seek in others. It is the shadow side of the Ascendant.”

Common Misconceptions About the 7th House

A common misconception is that the 7th house is only about marriage. Its territory is every significant one-to-one relationship: business partnerships, close friendships, open adversaries, and the therapist’s couch as well as the altar. Another error is reading the house’s sign and planets as a description of the partner alone; they describe the relationship itself — the pattern the native and the other co-create. The 7th house is a mirror, not a portrait.

Common Misconceptions About the 7th House

Misconception 1: The 7th house only means marriage. It also means serious business partnerships, contracts, lawsuits, and open enemies. A person with a strong 7th house may never marry but will have a significant legal battle or a lifelong rival.

Misconception 2: The sign on the 7th house cusp is the same as my partner’s Sun sign. Not necessarily. The 7th house sign describes the kind of relationship dynamic you attract, not the actual Sun sign of your partner. Your partner’s Sun sign could be anywhere in their chart. The 7th house sign is about the quality of the relationship, not the person’s identity.

Misconception 3: A 7th house with no planets means no relationships. An empty house is not empty of meaning. The sign on the cusp still rules. You may have no planets in the 7th house but still have strong relationships, because the ruler of the 7th house (the planet ruling the sign on its cusp) will be placed elsewhere in the chart and tell the story.

Misconception 4: The 7th house is always the opposite sign of the Ascendant. In whole sign houses, yes. But in quadrant systems (Placidus, Koch, Regiomontanus), the 7th house cusp is always opposite the Ascendant degree, but the house itself may be intercepted or may contain parts of two signs. Check your chart.

FAQ

What if I have no planets in my 7th house?
It means the focus of your life is not on partnerships. The 7th house themes still operate through the sign on its cusp and the house placement of its ruler. You may have a more private or indirect approach to commitment.

Does the 7th house predict divorce?
Yes, traditional astrologers used aspects to the 7th house ruler, malefics in the 7th house, and the condition of the Moon to predict divorce. A hard Saturn in the 7th house can indicate a delayed or difficult marriage, but it does not guarantee divorce.

What if my 7th house cusp is in a different sign than the sign opposite my Ascendant?
That cannot happen if you use the Descendant as the cusp. The Descendant is always exactly opposite the Ascendant degree, so the sign on the 7th house cusp is the sign that contains that degree. If your Ascendant is at 29 degrees of Aries, the Descendant is at 29 degrees of Libra, and the 7th house cusp is in Libra, not Taurus. The sign opposite the Ascendant sign is always the same as the sign on the Descendant cusp, but the degree matters if the cusp is at the edge of a sign.

How do I find my 7th house without a birth time?
You cannot find the exact cusp, but you can estimate the sign. If you know your Sun sign and the approximate time of day, you can guess the Ascendant. For example, if you were born near sunrise, the Ascendant is near your Sun sign, so the 7th house sign is the opposite sign. This is rough. Use a birth time if possible.

The 7th house is the point where the sky meets the ground at the moment of your birth, but on the western side. It is the place of the other, the partner, the opponent, the one who stands across from you. Finding it is as simple as locating the opposite of your rising degree. What you do with that knowledge is a matter of interpretation. For a deeper look at how the 7th house interacts with the other houses in synastry, see our guide to house overlays in relationship astrology. The full system of houses is explored in the astrology zodiac hub. For the meaning of the Descendant as a point, see the glossary entry on angles.
