Astrocartography Calculator
Astrocartography maps your birth chart onto the world: where each planet was rising or culminating at the moment you were born, its line crosses the Earth, and the tradition reads that place as amplifying the planet's energy for you. Enter your birth date, time, and place below to find your angular planets and your MC lines.
Updated August 23, 2026: planetary positions from the astronomy engine (JPL DE421-equivalent accuracy), angles from local sidereal time and the obliquity of the ecliptic, five-degree orb.
How Astrocartography Works
Every birth chart has four angles: the Ascendant (the sign rising in the east at your birth), the Midheaven (the sign culminating overhead), the Descendant (the sign setting in the west), and the Imum Coeli (the sign below the earth). These four points are the most personal part of the chart: they depend on the exact time and place of birth, and they change as you move across the planet. Astrocartography simply asks where each of the planets was sitting on one of these angles at your birth moment, and draws that place on the world.
The result is a set of lines. Where a planet was culminating, its MC line runs north-south along a meridian: the planet's energy appears in your career and reputation there. Where a planet was rising, its ASC line runs diagonally across the map: the planet's energy appears in your presence and your personal life. The tradition reads a Jupiter MC line as a place of growth and recognition, a Saturn MC line as a place of hard work and lasting structure, a Venus ASC line as a place where love and beauty find you easily.
Reading Your Angular Planets
The calculator finds every planet within five degrees of an angle at your birth place and time, and reads each one. The reading combines two layers: what the planet amplifies, and what the angle carries. A Sun on the ASC is identity amplified: a place where being yourself is the whole game. A Moon on the IC is home amplified: a place that feels like family instantly. A Saturn on the MC is career amplified in the serious key: a place of responsibility, where the work is hard and the structure lasts.
If no planet is angular at your birthplace, that is not a blank chart: it means your birth place does not sit on a major line, which most places do not. The traditional advice is to travel toward the lines of the planets you want to work with. The MC lines listed below tell you the exact meridians to look for.
Your MC Lines
The Midheaven line of each planet is a single meridian: the longitude where the planet was culminating at your birth moment. The calculator lists all ten. When you travel east or west and cross one of these meridians, that planet's energy moves toward your career and reputation. The ASC lines are diagonal and depend on latitude, which is why they are read place by place rather than listed as meridians: use the angular planets above to see whether a candidate place activates a planet on your Ascendant.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is astrocartography?
Astrocartography (locational astrology) maps the positions of the planets onto the Earth for the moment of your birth. Where a planet was rising or culminating at that moment, its line crosses the map, and the tradition reads that place as amplifying the planet's energy for you. The most important lines are the ASC lines (planet rising) and MC lines (planet culminating).
How is the birth chart location calculated?
The calculator computes the true positions of all ten planets from the astronomy engine, then the local Ascendant and Midheaven for your birth place and time using the standard formula (local sidereal time and the obliquity of the ecliptic). A planet is angular when it falls within five degrees of the Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant, or Imum Coeli.
What is the difference between an ASC line and an MC line?
An ASC (Ascendant) line is where a planet was rising at your birth moment: the line runs diagonally across the map, and the planet's energy appears in your personal presence and body. An MC (Midheaven) line is where a planet was culminating: the line runs north-south along a meridian, and the planet's energy appears in your career and reputation.
Which planets on the angles are considered beneficial?
In the traditional reading, Jupiter and Venus are the most comfortable planets to find angular: growth and love amplified. The Sun and Moon amplify identity and home. Mercury suits communication work, Mars suits action, Saturn brings hard but lasting structure, and Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto amplify their own intense signatures. Every planet is workable: the line tells you the kind of energy the place will bring out in you.
Do I need my exact birth time?
The Ascendant and Midheaven change by about one degree every four minutes, so an exact birth time matters for the angles. The Moon moves about half a degree in the same time; the outer planets barely move at all. If your birth time is unknown, the MC lines of the slow planets (Jupiter through Pluto) remain reliable.

Planetary positions are computed with the astronomy engine (JPL DE421-equivalent accuracy) in the browser. The Ascendant is calculated from the local sidereal time (GMST plus longitude) and the obliquity of the ecliptic (IAU formula), with the standard quadrant correction; the Midheaven is the local sidereal time itself. The angular orb is five degrees, the common convention in locational astrology. The readings of the planets and angles follow the consensus of modern astrocartography as developed by the tradition's standard texts.
