Candle Color Meanings
Twelve candle colors, twelve traditional sets of correspondences: the intention, herb, crystal, incense, day, and planet that carry each one. Pick a color below, or read the full table to build a working from the color up.
Updated August 23, 2026 — correspondences follow the traditional Hoodoo and Wiccan candle magic canon.
How to Use This Guide
Candle magic works on a simple principle: the color focuses the intention, the day and planet anchor it in the week, and the herb, crystal, and incense carry it while the candle burns. You do not need all six layers. One element, chosen with care, is enough to anchor a working; the full set simply makes it stronger.
Start with the intention, not the color. Ask what the working is actually for: protection, a new job, a difficult conversation, a dream you want to understand. Then find the color that matches that intention in the table below, light the candle at the day and hour that reinforce it, and dress it with the herb or oil if you have it. If you only have a white candle, use it: white stands in for any color, and the intention does the rest.
When the candle burns down, read the residue. A clean, even burn means the energy moved as asked. Heavy soot, a drowning flame, or a candle that refuses to stay lit is traditionally read as resistance: check the intention for something you are not saying, ground the working, and try again on a clearer day. The color is the first layer of the reading, and the wax is the last.
Why Candle Colors Matter
Color is the oldest shorthand in practical magic. Every tradition that works with candles: Hoodoo, folk Catholicism, Wicca, and the European grimoire line that runs through the Key of Solomon: assigns meanings to colors, and the meanings are strikingly consistent across traditions. Red is never a gentle color. White is never a harmful one. The consensus across centuries is the reason these correspondences are worth trusting: they were not invented by one author, they were confirmed by generations of practitioners who watched what worked.
The planetary layer comes from the same lineage. The days of the week are named after the seven classical planets: Monday for the Moon, Tuesday for Mars, Wednesday for Mercury, Thursday for Jupiter, Friday for Venus, Saturday for Saturn, Sunday for the Sun. A red candle for courage works best on Tuesday because Mars, the planet of action, rules the day. A green candle for money works best on Thursday because Jupiter, the planet of expansion, rules it. The candle color is the visible handle; the day and planet are the engine behind it.
This is also why the correspondences repeat across tools on this site. The same herb, crystal, and incense that appear here appear in the Correspondence Engine and the crystal and herb guides: one consistent canon, so a working built here can be rebuilt anywhere on the library without contradiction.

How to Read the Correspondences
Each entry in this guide gives you six layers. The intention is what the color is for: keep it to one clear sentence when you light the candle. The herb and incense dress the working: dried herbs can be sprinkled around the candle base, and incense is lit to carry the smoke through the room. The crystal sits beside the candle and holds the frequency while the wax melts. The day andplanet are the timing: light the candle on the matching day (or the planetary hour, for finer work) and the energy arrives in tune.
Two colors deserve a warning. Black absorbs: it is a shield and a vacuum, excellent for protection and closure, but it must be grounded when the candle is done, and a black candle should not be reused for a different intention. Purple and violet are strong medicine: they open spiritual work and psychic contact, and they should be used deliberately, not casually. The gentle colors: white, pink, green, silver: are the daily workhorses; the intense ones: red, black, purple: are for the moments that need force.
If a situation asks for two intentions at once, stack the layers instead of the colors: a green candle dressed with the abundance herb and lit on Thursday covers money; add the gold crystal for the visible success on top. One color per candle keeps the reading clean. Two colors in one working blur the signal, and the residue becomes unreadable.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does each candle color mean?
White means clarity and purification, red means courage and passion, pink means love and friendship, green means abundance and growth, gold means luck and success, violet and purple mean healing and spiritual power, blue means truth and communication, silver means dreams and intuition, black means protection and banishing, orange means creativity, and yellow means intellect and focus.
Which candle color should I use for money?
Green is the traditional money color: it draws abundance, growth, and financial opportunity. Gold is the second choice when the goal is visible success such as a raise or a win. Light green on a Thursday, the day of Jupiter, the planet of expansion.
Can I substitute a white candle for another color?
Yes. White is the universal substitute in candle magic: it carries any intention when the specific color is not available. The intention matters more than the wax, but the color focuses it.
When should I light a black candle?
Black candles are for protection, grounding, and banishing: absorbing negative energy, closing a chapter, or shielding a space. Because black absorbs, always ground the working afterward and do not reuse the candle for other intentions.
Do candle colors work with other correspondences?
Yes: the color is one layer of a full correspondence set. Pair it with the matching herb, crystal, incense, day, and planet listed in this guide for a complete working. The Correspondence Engine combines these layers automatically.
