Cartomancy Dictionary
An ordinary deck of playing cards is one of the oldest divination tools in the West: fifty-two cards, four suits, thirteen ranks, read together like words in a sentence. This dictionary gives every card, built from the suit that names the field of life and the rank that names the stage.

How to Read the Cards
Cartomancy reads an ordinary deck the way the Lenormand reads its thirty-six cards: each card is one clear thing, and the reading is built by combination. The suit names the field of life: hearts are the heart's matters, diamonds the world's, clubs the mind's work, spades the difficult road. The rank names the stage: the Ace is the seed, the Ten the completion, the Jack the messenger, the Queen the woman, the King the man. The card is the suit and the rank together: the Queen of Hearts is a woman in a matter of love, the Ten of Spades is the completion of a difficult affair.
The classic method is the three-card spread (past, present, future) or the nine-card square. Read the cards in order, and read them together: a card's meaning is colored by the cards beside it, and the same card in a different position tells a different stage of the same story. The tradition reads the deck upright, without reversals: the combination and the position carry the nuance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is cartomancy?
Cartomancy is divination with an ordinary deck of playing cards. Each of the 52 cards carries a meaning: the suit names the field of life (hearts love, diamonds money, clubs work, spades difficulty) and the rank names the stage of the matter (ace a beginning, ten a completion). The cards are read in combinations, like the Lenormand system that grew from the same tradition.
How do you read playing cards?
The basic method draws three cards for the past, present, and future, or lays a spread of nine in three rows. Each card is read by its suit and rank together: the Queen of Hearts is a woman in a matter of love, the Ten of Spades is the completion of a difficult affair. The position in the spread colors the meaning.
What does each card mean?
Each card combines its suit and its rank: the suit names the field of life, the rank names the stage. The Ace of Hearts is a new beginning in love; the Ten of Clubs is the completion of a work; the King of Spades is an established man in a difficult matter. This dictionary gives every combination.
What is the difference between cartomancy and tarot?
Tarot uses a dedicated deck of 78 cards with a rich symbolic system. Cartomancy uses an ordinary deck of 52 playing cards and reads them with simpler, more practical meanings. The playing card tradition is older in the West in its everyday form, and it shares its court cards and suits with the tarot's minor arcana.
Do reversed cards matter in cartomancy?
In the older tradition, no: playing cards were read upright, and the meaning came from the combination and position. Some modern readers use reversals, but the classic method reads every card upright and relies on the spread, the same way the Lenormand tradition does.
