Natal Chart Calculator

A map of the sky at your birth: the ten planets in their signs and houses, the Ascendant and the angles, and the major aspects between the planets, computed from real ephemeris data in your browser.

The time matters for the Ascendant and the houses: without a birth time, the chart shows the planets in their signs only.

Updated August 23, 2026: ephemeris positions (VSOP87), equal houses, major aspects, all computed client-side.

How to Read Your Chart

The natal chart is read in layers, from the center out. The Sun names the essence: the will that runs through everything. The Moon names the feelings: what feeds you and what you need to feel safe. Mercury the mind, Venus the bond, Mars the drive. These five personal planets sit in the signs that color them (a Leo Sun shines, a Capricorn Sun climbs), and in the houses that place them in a field of life (the Sun in the seventh house shines in partnership).

The Ascendant and the Midheaven are the two angles that anchor the chart to the ground: the Ascendant is the sign rising in the east at your birth, the mask and the body; the Midheaven is the point culminating in the south, the public role and the calling. The houses are counted from the Ascendant, which is why the birth time matters: without it, the houses cannot be placed, and only the signs remain.

The Aspects

The aspects are the angles between the planets, and they are where the chart becomes a story rather than a list. A conjunction merges two energies into one (Sun conjunct Mars: the will and the drive act as a single engine). A square frictions them until the tension is used (Moon square Saturn: feeling and structure pull against each other). A trine flows (Venus trine Jupiter: love and expansion support each other without effort). The reading below lists the aspects within orb and gives the nature of each link.

Read the chart as a conversation: the Sun is the speaker, the Moon the tone, the planets the voices, the signs the language, the houses the rooms, and the aspects the relationships between the voices. No single element is the verdict; the pattern is the portrait. The tradition reads it as a map of character, not a script of fate: the aspects show the tensions and gifts you were handed, and the work of a life is learning to use them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a natal chart?

A natal chart is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth: the ten planets in their zodiac signs, the houses they fall in, and the angles between them. The tradition reads that map as the pattern of your character: the Sun is the essence, the Moon the feelings, Mercury the mind, Venus what you love, Mars how you act.

What do I need to calculate my birth chart?

You need your birth date, your birth time, and your birth place (latitude and longitude). The birth time matters most for the Ascendant and the houses: without it, the chart can only show the planets in their signs. You can use the location button to fill your coordinates automatically.

What are the planets in a natal chart?

The standard chart uses ten bodies: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Each carries a function: the Sun is the core will, the Moon the emotional nature, Mercury the mind, Venus love and values, Mars action, Jupiter expansion, Saturn structure, Uranus rupture, Neptune dream, Pluto transformation.

What is the Ascendant?

The Ascendant is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth moment. It changes roughly every two hours, which is why an exact birth time is needed. The tradition reads it as the mask and the body: how you enter a room and how others first see you.

How are the aspects calculated?

An aspect is an angular relationship between two planets: their longitudes differ by a key angle (0, 60, 90, 120, or 180 degrees) within a small tolerance called the orb. The conjunction merges, the sextile offers, the square frictions, the trine flows, and the opposition polarizes.

The planetary positions are computed with the astronomy-engine library (VSOP87 theory), the same ephemeris engine used by the other astrology tools on this site. The Ascendant and Midheaven use the standard sidereal time formulas. The meanings of the planets, signs, houses, and aspects follow the consensus of the astrological tradition.
