Rune Casting

Three runes from the Elder Futhark, laid for the past, the present, and the future. Frame your question, draw, and read the three as one story: what led here, what is true now, and where it is moving.

Updated August 23, 2026: the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark, three rune cast, direct readings in the older tradition.

The Three Rune Cast

The three rune cast is the simplest complete reading in runic practice, and it follows the same logic as the tarot three-card spread. The first rune is the past: the current that brought the matter here. The second is the present: the energy at work now, often the rune that carries the most weight in the reading. The third is the future: the direction the matter is moving, the road under the wheels rather than a fixed fate.

The Elder Futhark is the oldest runic alphabet, twenty-four letters used by the Germanic peoples from the second century onward, arranged in three groups of eight. Each rune is a letter and a symbol at once: Fehu is the letter F and the meaning "cattle, wealth", Isa is the letter I and the meaning "ice". The divinatory tradition reads the meanings, and the alphabet itself is part of the reading: the runes were carved on stone and wood for fifteen centuries before they were drawn from a bag.

How to Read Your Cast

Read the three runes as a sentence. The past rune explains the present one: Hagalaz in the past (a disruption) explains Isa in the present (the freeze that followed), and the future rune reads the way out: Sowilo in the future is the light returning after the ice. If a rune repeats across casts, the tradition reads it as the matter insisting on being seen.

The direct method used here reads each rune by its own meaning, without reversal. This is the older tradition: the rune is what it is, and the position in the cast carries the nuance. The same rune in the past is a cause, in the present a truth, in the future a direction. Read the rune itself, then read it through its position, and the cast opens.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you cast runes?

The simplest method draws runes from a bag without looking: frame a question, draw three runes one at a time, and lay them out for the past, the present, and the future. This casting uses the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark, each read by its traditional meaning.

What is the Elder Futhark?

The Elder Futhark is the oldest runic alphabet, used by the Germanic peoples from roughly the second to the eighth century. It has 24 runes arranged in three groups of eight (the aettir). Each rune is both a letter and a symbol with its own name and meaning, which is what makes it a divinatory system.

What does a three rune cast mean?

The three rune cast reads time like the tarot three-card spread: the first rune is the past that shaped the matter, the second is the present energy, and the third is the direction it is moving. The three are read as one story.

Can a rune be reversed?

In one common method, yes: a rune drawn upside down is read as the shadow of its meaning. This casting uses the direct meaning of each rune, the method of the older tradition, which reads the rune itself without reversal. Both methods are traditional; choose the one that speaks clearly to you.

How often should I cast runes?

The tradition advises casting when a decision is real, not out of habit. One cast per question, read honestly, then act on the reflection. Re-casting the same question until you like the answer teaches nothing.
