A three card spread from the full seventy-eight card deck: one for the past that shaped the matter, one for the present energy, and one for the direction it is moving. Frame your question, draw, and read the arc.

Updated August 23, 2026: full 78-card deck, three card spread, meanings in the standard tradition.

The Three Card Spread

The three card spread is the oldest and most used spread in tarot practice, and the reason is simple: three cards are enough to tell a complete story. The first card is the past: the current of events and choices that brought the matter to where it stands. The second card is the present: the energy now, what is actually at work under the surface. The third card is the near future: the direction the matter is moving, not a fixed fate but the road that is currently under the wheels.

Read the three as one sentence. The past card explains the present card: the Tower in the past (a collapse) explains the Hermit in the present (a withdrawal that followed it), and the Sun in the future reads as the clarity that comes after the retreat. The story is always more useful than the individual cards, which is why the reading text below keeps the position and asks you to connect the three.

The Cards

This reading uses the full deck. The twenty-two Major Arcana are the big themes: the journeys, the turning points, the forces that work on a life from outside the daily routine. The fifty-six Minor Arcana are the daily texture: four suits that map the four elements, Wands (fire and will), Cups (water and feeling), Swords (air and thought), Pentacles (earth and matter), each with fourteen ranks from Ace to King. The majors appear in about one draw in three; the minors carry the everyday reading.

The minors are read as a combination of their suit and their rank: the Queen of Cups is the master of feeling in the realm of emotion, the Eight of Swords is the movement of the mind caught in its own thoughts. The reading text builds each card's meaning from those two layers, the same way a reader would at a table.

How to Read Yours

Read the past card as the cause, the present card as the truth, and the future card as the direction. Then ask the practical question: what does the past card say about what led here, what does the present card ask you to see honestly, and what does the future card suggest about the next decision? The spread is a mirror, not a command: the future card is the road under the wheels, and you are the one holding the wheel.

If a Major Arcana card appears, give it the weight of a main character: it names the theme of the whole spread. If the spread is all one suit, the element dominates the matter (all Cups: emotion governs; all Swords: thought and conflict; all Wands: action; all Pentacles: work and money). If the same card repeats across draws, the tradition says the matter is insisting on being seen.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a free tarot reading work?

This reading draws three cards from the full 78-card deck: the first for the past, the second for the present, and the third for the near future. Each card is read in its position, and the three together tell the arc of the situation. You can draw a new spread as often as you like.

What does a three card spread mean?

The classic three-card spread reads time: the first card is the past that shaped the situation, the second is the present energy, and the third is the direction the matter is moving. The three cards are read as one story: how the past led here, what is true now, and where it is going.

Do I need to ask a question first?

It helps. Frame the matter in your mind before drawing: a relationship, a job, a decision. The cards then speak to that matter rather than to everything at once. A general reading is possible, but a focused question gives a focused answer.

Can the same card mean different things?

Yes. A card's meaning shifts with its position (past, present, or future) and with the cards around it. The Tower in the past is a collapse that already happened; the Tower in the future is one that is coming. The reading text gives the core meaning; the position colors it.

Is this real fortune telling?

The reading is a mirror, not a forecast: it gives your mind a pattern to think through the situation. The cards do not force events; they prompt reflection, the same way the oracle systems on this site work. Read them as a structured moment of honesty with yourself.
