Vedic Sign Calculator

Western astrology reads the seasons; Vedic astrology reads the stars. Your sidereal sign is usually the one behind your tropical sign: find yours.

Tropical vs. sidereal

The two zodiacs start from different points. The tropical zodiac: used in most Western astrology: is anchored to the spring equinox, so it stays aligned with the seasons. The sidereal zodiac: used in Vedic astrology: is anchored to the fixed stars. Because the Earth's axis slowly shifts (precession), the sidereal sky is now about 24 degrees behind the tropical one. For most people, that moves the Sun into the previous sign.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Vedic sign calculation precise?

This calculator is approximate (to about a day). A precise sidereal chart requires your exact birth time and place, plus the ayanamsa used by your preferred tradition: the calculator gives you the right sign for most dates, with a note when you are near a cusp.

Which system is more accurate?

Neither is 'more accurate': they answer different questions. Tropical astrology reads your relationship to the seasons and life cycle; sidereal reads your relationship to the fixed sky. Many practitioners use both.
