Void of Course Moon Calculator
The moon is void of course between its last major aspect in a sign and its entry into the next sign: a short, traditional pause that many practitioners use for rest instead of new beginnings. This calculator gives the exact start and end of every void of course period from 2026 through 2031, computed from JPL ephemeris data, plus the moon phase and zodiac sign for any date you choose.
Updated August 23, 2026: every VoC period, moon phase, and zodiac ingress from January 2026 to January 2031, calculated from JPL DE421 ephemeris data.
What Is a Void of Course Moon?
In traditional astrology the moon is the fastest moving body in the sky, and it is always making aspects: angular relationships to the planets that astrologers read as the moon "meeting" that planet. The major aspects are the conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition. Between its last major aspect in one zodiac sign and its entry into the next sign, the moon has no more meetings scheduled: it is traveling through the final degrees of the sign without touching anything. That interval is called the void of course moon, from the old French phrase for "out of its course."
The meaning is simple to grasp once you picture it. While the moon makes aspects, it is doing business: it carries the energy of one planet into contact with another, and the work of the day is shaped by those meetings. When the last aspect is done, the moon has no more business until it changes sign. Nothing is begun during that window that the moon will "carry through": the traditional counsel is that things started in the void come to nothing, stall, or need to be redone.
This is a timing tradition, not a claim about physics. It belongs to the same practical family as choosing a day of the week for a working, or an hour of the day for a ritual. Many people who work with the moon simply prefer to schedule beginnings for the moment the moon enters a fresh sign, and treat the void of course hours as a pause. Whether you follow it strictly or just use it as a prompt to slow down, it is one of the most widely used timing rules in practical astrology.
How This Calculator Works
Every time in this tool is computed, not looked up from a published list. The positions of the sun, moon, and planets are calculated directly from the JPL DE421 ephemeris (the same NASA dataset used by professional astronomy software), in geocentric tropical longitude. A period is marked void of course from the moment the moon leaves the orb of its last major aspect until the exact instant it enters the next zodiac sign.
The major aspects used are the conjunction (0°), sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°), and opposition (180°), with the standard orbs of 8° for the conjunction, square, trine, and opposition, and 6° for the sextile. The bodies included are the sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and the true lunar node. The moon's own aspects are not counted, by convention, because it is the mover rather than the target. All times are calculated in UTC and shown in your local time zone.
This methodology is stated openly so the results can be checked: it is the same convention used by the major astrological ephemerides, with one deliberate choice, the inclusion of the outer planets and the lunar node, which makes the VoC windows slightly shorter on some days than systems that count only the traditional seven planets. If a source gives a different start time by an hour or two, that is normally the difference in which bodies and orbs it counts, not an error.
What to Do (and Not Do) During a Void of Course Moon
The traditional list of things to avoid in the void is long, but it reduces to one idea: do not start anything you want to last. Contracts, launches, purchases, job offers, and first dates all carry the flavor of "new beginnings," and traditional practice says the void is not their hour. Routine work is fine: answering email, cleaning, organizing, catching up on sleep. So is finishing: the void is a good time to close a chapter, clear a space, or complete the last details of something already moving.
Practitioners also use the void for reflection. Because the moon is between signs, it is between jobs: a natural window for journaling, meditation, and planning rather than acting. Many who follow the moon will draft a plan during the void and execute it the moment the moon enters the new sign. The pause becomes a feature, not a bug.
One useful rule of thumb: if a decision can wait a few hours, check the calculator and see whether a fresh sign ingress is near. The moon enters a new sign every two and a half days, so there is never a long wait. Beginning something at the first hour of a new lunar sign, with the moon freshly aspecting planets again, is the traditional best time for anything you want to grow.
The 8 Moon Phases at a Glance
| Phase | What the moon is doing | Best use in practice |
|---|---|---|
| New Moon | The moon is between the earth and the sun: dark, at the start of its cycle. | Setting intentions, planting seeds, beginning new work. |
| Waxing Crescent | A sliver of light returns; the moon is pulling away from the sun. | Building momentum, taking first visible steps. |
| First Quarter | Half of the disk is lit; the moon squares the sun. | Overcoming obstacles, making decisions, adjusting course. |
| Waxing Gibbous | More than half lit, on the way to full. | Refining, perfecting, gathering support. |
| Full Moon | The moon is opposite the sun: fully lit, at the peak of the cycle. | Revealing, harvesting, celebrating, releasing what is done. |
| Waning Gibbous | Light begins to recede. | Sharing results, giving thanks, distributing what was gathered. |
| Last Quarter | Half lit again, on the waning side. | Releasing, forgiving, clearing out what no longer serves. |
| Waning Crescent | A thin sliver before darkness. | Resting, surrendering, closing cycles, preparing for the new moon. |
How to Plan Around the Void of Course
The practical habit is simple: check the moon before you commit. If you are about to sign, launch, or begin something and the calculator shows the moon void of course, you have two choices: wait until the next ingress (usually within a day or two), or begin the preparation now and execute at the ingress. The latter is the traditional compromise, and it is why the month view on this page is useful: you can see the whole month's VoC windows and ingresses at a glance and plan around them.
Because every VoC period here is tied to an exact ingress time, the tool also works as a general moon sign calendar. The moon spends about two and a half days in each sign, and the sign it occupies shapes the traditional flavor of the day: a moon in Taurus for steady practical work, a moon in Gemini for communication, a moon in Pisces for dreams and endings. The ingress times in the month view tell you when each sign begins, so you can time a working to the sign as well as to the phase.
The data runs to January 2031, which covers several full cycles of every pattern the moon makes: the 27.3-day sidereal cycle, the 29.5-day synodic cycle, and the longer 18.6-year node cycle, at least in part. For dates outside the covered range, the moon phase approximation below still works for the main phases, and this page will be extended as the range is approached.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does void of course moon mean?
The moon is void of course (VoC) after it has made its last major aspect to a planet in a zodiac sign and before it enters the next sign. During that window the moon is, in traditional astrology, "in no sign": it has finished its work in the sign it is leaving and has not yet begun its work in the next one. Practitioners treat the window as a short pause, best used for rest and reflection rather than new beginnings.
How long does a void of course moon last?
Most void of course periods last between a few hours and about a day and a half. The moon crosses a zodiac sign in roughly two and a half days, and its last major aspect usually ends several hours before the sign change. The exact duration depends on the positions of the other planets; this calculator gives the precise start and end times for every VoC period from 2026 through 2031.
What should you avoid doing during a void of course moon?
Traditional practice says the void of course moon is a poor time to start anything you want to grow: signing contracts, launching projects, making major purchases, or having first conversations that matter. Because the moon is between signs, outcomes are said to "come to nothing" or to stall. The window is better used for finishing, resting, cleaning, and routine tasks that do not need momentum.
Is the moon void of course right now?
Use the calculator on this page: it checks the current time against every void of course period from 2026 through 2031 and tells you immediately whether the moon is void of course now, when the period ends, and what sign the moon enters next.
What signs does the moon move through in a month?
The moon visits all twelve zodiac signs in about 27.3 days, spending roughly two and a half days in each. Because the signs are measured from the equinox (tropical zodiac), the same sign always covers the same part of the year; this calculator lists the exact ingress time for every sign change from 2026 through 2031.

Positions are computed from the JPL DE421 ephemeris, the NASA/JPL planetary and lunar ephemeris used in astronomy software, via the Skyfield library. The zodiac is tropical (measured from the equinox), the frame is geocentric, and the aspect convention follows standard astrological practice for the major aspects. The moon phase approximation used for dates outside the covered range is the standard synodic period of 29.53058867 days. Times are exact to the minute for the covered range and are shown in your local time zone.
